Comments: One of the three top hotels (along with Lee Gardens Plaza and the Novotel) that dominate the central tourist area of Hat Yai. It has probably the nicest lobby area of any hotel in Hat Yai (pictured) and the rooms in the new wing are very pleasant. The rooms contain personal safes which is a really welcome feature. The old wing is looking a bit past its best these days and is probably due for a bit of a makeover.
On the fifth floor is a decent size swimming pool which is exclusively for the use of guests and free. There is also a well-equipped gym, also for guests only, but it costs Bt50 to use.
Rates quoted above are direct from the hotel but once again it is possible to get a cheaper deal from a travel agent about 100 yards away. Konsortium travel agency can offer you a standard room in the old wing for Bt700 and a deluxe room in the new wing for Bt1,050. Note though that the Konsortium price does not include breakfast whereas the higher rate direct from the hotel includes breakfast for two people.

Comments: Located not so much on a river as on a klong (canal). Never mind, it's a pretty klong (as far as klongs go) with lots of flowers planted along its sides. The location is fairly isolated and away from the hustle and bustle but close enough to town not to be too inconvenient.
One of my pleasures in life is reading stuff that has been badly translated into English by Thais and the River Inn brochure is one of the best. It must cost them quite a bit to get these brochures printed so why don't they grab a farang off the street and offer Bt500 to get the English checked before going to print?
Even the most boozed-up, brain-dead, farang sexpat could probably put them right. Are you ready for this?
"A first class hotel, located right at centre of Haadyai, the River Inn, which has been specially designed and constructed to feature the Thai architectural identity, now stands as witness thereto."
"The Hotel's staff workers are courteous and knowingly intelligent."
"Thai, Chainess and European foods, prepared by experienced cooks and served to you by beautyful young attendants. At night diners are entertained with music and song by leading musical bands and singers."
Zezar Ancient Massage offers ayuraverdic massage service a new dimension of cordially warm massager service by young, beautiful massagers, specially trained and groomed therefor."
The lady on reception was very pleasant but I couldn't figure out if she was 'knowingly intelligent'. I like my massagers to be 'well groomed' so this is a good thing. It actually doesn't seem like a bad place at all. It's a lot quieter than most hotels in Hat Yai and for Bt480 a night with 'beautyful young attendants' to wait on you, how can you go wrong?
As a result of the economic downturn, the 'Zezar Ancient Massage' facility has closed so it is no longer possible to experience 'a new dimension of cordially warm massager service by young, beautiful massagers, specially trained and groomed therefor'.

Comments: A nice, clean-looking hotel centrally located close to Lee Gardens. The whole place appears to have been completely refurbished quite recently (2004/2005?). There are over 100 double and twin rooms which come with A/C, satellite TV, hot water in the bathrooms, a kettle, hairdryer, refrigerator and mini-bar.
The hotel has 24 hour security. Sakol is pronounced 'Saa-gon' in Thai. It means international/Western.
Guest Comments:
Very small room, I was astounded that the sofa and the bed is just near the door with a tiny writing table and a small bathroom finishing the look. There is no view..the channels on the television are good though and there an electric kettle provided in each room. I just find the room too small, almost tiny for the rate that I have to pay and even though early in the morning, in the lobby, the hotels provides a free drink stand with biscuits and 3-in-1 tea/coffee but I was quite irritated with the frosty receptionists and front desk who are actually older ladies. I did not like the way they spoke to me and I would not be here again. (April 2009)

Comments: Located close to the Hat Yai Central Hotel but a bit more upmarket, the Sakura Grand View has quite a fancy lobby and boasts 'panoramic views of the city'. The hotel brochure also claims that the building is an 'innovatively architectural design' (sic). I don't think Sir Norman Foster was involved with the design; it just looks like a typical Thai hotel to me.
Sakura Grand View is a standard mid-range Hat Yai hotel and this one is very popular with Malaysian tourists. There is a large 'ancient' massage facility inside the hotel with lots of young massage girls from north and northeast Thailand, Karaoke girls, snooker, a restaurant, and a bar.
A Karaoke place with lots of pretty girls sitting outside every evening is located right next door. It used to be called Violin, I think, but now it has been painted orange and is called The Star. It features Karaoke and Coyotes. Thailand must be the only country in the world where Coyote is a recognised job description.

2nd trip staying at this hotel room #1509, complained about air-con too cold; their technicians couldn't do anything about it, instead they told me to "off/on" manually. After talking to them i felt so stupid. Suggest you take this into consideration when booking a hotel room. (September 2011)
Of the many hotels i have stayed in hatyai since 1980s, this hotel is better than most and the price is affordable. (July 2011)
Very popular with Malaysian tourists as it offers a comfortable and quiet stay with all the rooms sound-proofed against the busy main street below. The free wi fi in the room and also hotel lobby is a definite plus factor and the view from my room on the 11th floor is just wonderful. The massage facility and the people working there are made up of mostly fair-skinned lasses from the North and I must admit that some are quite stunning! The room is also fitted with a safe deposit box which can hold a 14" laptop for those who DO bring one. Rooms are always well cleaned and I find that this is indeed one of the better hotels away from the central part of Hat Yai. (October 2010)
Clean, spacious mostly cater for Malaysian especially during the Malaysia school or public holidays. Price are high compare to Bangkok for services provided at the same star of hotel. Most important to point to visitor that the receptionist are the most unfriendly to guest that visit Hatyai for different purpose, etc. perhaps due to those visitors for cheap leisure... . Exclusively to services except common reply in Thailand "a moment please" even for the simple direct answer and my last visit was April, 2011 and waited for a room for more than 5 hours. WHY, they refused to advise that the main water pipe in the hotel bursted. Finally, checked-in to the room and had waited for another 3 -4 hours before the water runs clean.
Worst, reached the hotel at 0900m hours after travelled from Seam Reap, crossed border to Arayanprathet to Bangkok waited for 9 hours at the Sai Tai Mai Bus Terminal for departure Bangkok at 1930 hours to reach Hatyai next day 0730 hours and reached Grand Sakura View Hotel at 0800 hours. Next trip August 01, 2011 to Golden Triangle and doing the same via bus which is one of the bus system in Thailand that I frequently enjoy heading from Chiang Rai-Chiang Mai-Krabi-Hatyai-Peng and all the way back to Kampong in Singapre.
All for sight-seeing, local food and beer with reasonable and comfortable
h-o-t-e-l. (Yearly 2 to 3 times at 2-4 nights each visit)

Comments: This medium size hotel is a little way from the centre of town, however, the location is quite convenient. There are lots of places to eat nearby and it doesn't take long to walk into town.
The room prices are cheap and the hotel offers free Wi-Fi.
I used to stay in an apartment very close to SC Heritage and each evening a selection of painted ladies would arrive by tuk-tuk and disappear into the hotel.
According to a few online forums I visited years ago, the girls can be rented but they are quite expensive (by Thai standards). I have no clue whether this business is still in operation.

Comments: Conveniently located for the centre of town, the Siam Centre is at the higher end of the quality scale in Hat Yai's range of hotels. It has the obligatory 'Thai Massage' centre plus a restaurant, Karaoke lounge and snooker hall.

Comments: This is not an area of town that appeals to me very much personally but this hotel seems to be popular with quite a few Malaysian visitors.
Oliver massage shop (very popular with Malaysians) is nearby, as is Sawoei restaurant, and a number of other restaurants, bars and entertainment venues.

Comments: The Singapore Hotel owes an enormous debt of gratitude to Lonely Planet. In one edition of LP the description for this hotel included the magic words, 'security-conscious'. Backpackers, worried about someone stealing their flip-flops or baggy Chinese fisherman pants, flock here and I know it can only be because of the LP endorsement. They would never find the hotel otherwise - it's a lot further than 150m from the train station for a start.
But is it really 'security-conscious'? As far as I can tell it is no more or less 'security-conscious' than any other Hat Yai hotel in this price range. Anyone entering the hotel has to pass the reception desk but that is not unusual. It really makes me wonder about LP at times when they come out with these vague statements.
Note: It's January 2005 and I have just flicked through the latest Lonely Planet Thailand Guide. I am pleased to see they have changed some of the things written in earlier editions (including what I complained of above) and generally their review of Hat Yai in the latest edition seems to be a bit better than it was previously.

Comments: At the time of writing (March 2007), this - as far as I am aware - is Hat Yai's newest hotel. I've said it many times before that new hotels are always a good bet in Thailand. They look great when they are first completed but after a few years they normally get quite tatty.
I visited three weeks after the hotel opened and it looked great. Rooms have the usual facilities plus personal safes which I wish every hotel would have. The location is quiet and because Hat Yai is so small the hotel is still close to everything.
For a room rate less than Bt1,000 a night you can't really go wrong. Because it's so new, the hotel isn't on the map yet but it's fairly close to the Emperor Hotel.

Comments: Not for tourists, but for those looking to spend longer in Hat Yai.
This development contains property to buy, as well as some units to rent. Different room sizes are available starting from Bt5,500 per month (not including electricity). The location is a little way out of town on Suphasarnrangsan Road. The advantage over somewhere like Wanthana Mansion is that it is set back from the main road a little so therefore it is quieter.
The disadvantage is that if you don't have your own transport then it will mean paying for a lot more tuk-tuks and motorbike taxis into town.
When I first saw this place at the end of 2003 it looked OK. Six years later, and it seems that no external maintenance has been done at all. The paint is a mess and generally the building is looking very run-down.
During the economic boom in the 1990's a lot of property was built in Thailand by investors hoping to make a good return on their money. After the bubble burst a lot of property wasn't sold and people lost interest.
A lot of places that were originally designed to be luxurious condos look like quite shoddy apartment buildings now.

Comments: A visitor to this site asked why I hadn't included the Taipei. I'm not sure. I've been past hundreds of times but for some reason never included it here. Well, here it is.
Many hotels in Thailand these days are international standard and although they are comfortable and convenient, some of the more adventurous travellers might find them a tad boring.
The Taipei is reminiscent of the kind of hotels that you used to find all over Thailand 30 years ago. It's cheap, A/C isn't automatically included with every room, and I'm sure that if the walls could talk they would have lots of intersting stories.
The part of town it is in located is one that I was more familiar with as a single man in Hat Yai. The area is pretty lively at night and there is plenty going on.
Guest Comments:
A rather old hotel, that's somewhat run down, but for 350 baht I found it to be a better value than most of the 600-700 baht hotels that I've stayed at in Hat Yai. The room was fine, a bit rundown but not exceptionally so. Hot water and no wifi, I'd stay here again. (September 2011)

Comments: Stereotyping nationalities isn't very fair but it seems that certain traits are common with people from certain countries. As an example, when Germans come to Thailand they must stay near, or on, the beach. I heard this fact years ago from someone in the travel business and it seems to be true from my observations.
The Malaysians coming to Hat Yai like to stay right in the centre of town, that is, within spitting distance of Lee Gardens Plaza. To have a successful business in Hat Yai, it must be within a very small area in the centre of town if it depends on tourism. If it is just a short distance outside that area it will most likely fail.
Hotels a little way from the centre of town, in my humble opinion, offer much better value for money. The distances we are talking about are not huge but you need to be prepared to walk a little.
The Tanaphat Hatyai Hotel is one such hotel, a little way from the centre of town. It is a pleasant, smaller hotel and the rooms actually resemble hotel rooms rather than 'guest house' rooms. The staff are very friendly.
It is located right on Suphasarnrangsan Road so there are many eating options just yards away. Lee Gardens is about a ten minute walk away or a few minutes in a tuk-tuk.
Guest Comments:
The hotel was not full even though all the hotels in central Hat Yai were not available for the period from 9th till 10th July. This must be due to the fact that any hotels further than New Season are considered too far.
The manager or owner was at the front desk when I arrived and the whole affair of obtaining a room was quick. I had a room on the 6th floor, the room was sound-proofed from the street below. The TV channels were again similar to VC Apartment's and like most hotels now, you can watch Fox, Universal Studios and a channel from Malaysia.
Only 1 complimentary bottled or should I say that plasticky water container. Everything worked, the standing shower had cold/hot controls, 2 towels, 2 bars of soap and shampoo. There was a balcony and a round small table with a chair. The lighting was mostly subdued and the wifi was actually pay per hour at 20 bht per hour.
The lobby is simple and very quiet, not a single whorist around and the area around it is just facing Supharasangan road. The bed was not hard but your body do sink into it. The 2 pillows were too soft for my liking so if one wants to read on the bed .. it is not ideal at all. The cupboard and the smaller cabinet just under the television are very sufficient for a few days stay.
There are 2 power sockets, one at the in-house or in-hotel phone and another just at the writing table. Suprahasangan road tends to be busy but I did not hear any rowdy road races that night and also the sliding window was built well to soundproof any noise. Parking is ample for 20-25 cars and I parked my rented Honda just beside the main building.
The front desk girl working in the evening was friendly .. to sum it up .. Thanaphat is not often fully booked because it is not affiliated with any tour agencies in Hat Yai and it will remain so that way and I am sure just like VC Apartments, it might be fully booked every week but just maybe due to the distance, rooms can still be had. (July 2011)

Comments: A long-term stay 'Mansion' building, close to the bus station and the weekend night market. It is also close to Thungsao Mansion and Chudchada Place, both of which, in my humble opinion, offer better value for money. Facilities in all of these places are basically the same (TV with UBC, fridge, wireless Internet, hot water) but a fridge and TV will cost you Bt1,000 a month more here compared to the other two I mentioned. Wireless Internet access is free.
It is located only a matter of yards away from the bus station and the night market which runs from Thursday to Sunday. Rooms are also available on a daily basis which might be handy for someone catching an early bus out of Hat Yai.

Comments: Terrace View is a lot more upmarket than the majority of Hat Yai apartment buildings without being too expensive. I stayed there for five years.
It is located conveniently near the Hat Yai Bangkok hospital, Carrefour, Lotus and Mor Or. Terrace View has a contract with the Hat Yai Bangkok hospital for staff accommodation and many of the residents are therefore doctors and nurses.
Most people staying there are quiet, respectable, professional people but during my stay I had to put up with some really obnoxious neighbours on a few occasions. When this happens, unfortunately, the Thai staff do not know how to deal with the problem.
Being woken up every night at 3am by a Coyote dancer returning home from work and fighting and screaming with another Thai girl can make your life pretty miserable.
However, if you are lucky and have good neighbours it is a great place to stay. The rooms are clean, pleasant, well furnished and a decent size. Fridges and TVs are not supplied. You can either buy your own or rent these things from the apartment.
There is a laundry room with washers and dryers, a filtered drinking water machine, a minimart, and a full service laundry. All rooms have access to Wi-Fi Internet.
The normal rooms are all the same size but those with a better view are more expensive (Bt5,500 or Bt6,000). Rooms on the second floor have a terrace outside, which is very pleasant, and these rooms cost Bt6,500.
There are a limited number of suites with two rooms and a kitchen counter. These are very comfortable and suite residents also get a reserved car parking space. Originally these were Bt14,000 per month but I think the price went down to Bt13,000.
There is parking on the ground floor and also next door. A few years ago there were always free car parking spaces but with so many residents having cars now it can sometimes be difficult finding a space.
There is 24 hour security consisting of security guards and CCTV monitoring. Terrace View attracts wealthier residents than most apartment buildings and some years ago it was being targeted by criminals.
The girl staying next door to me had her room broken into and the thief beat her up and attempted to rape her as well as stealing money and other things.
After that, Terrace View beefed up the security. All rooms were fitted with burglar bars, more CCTV cameras were installed, and external lighting was added outside the building. It's OK now but remember always to keep your burglar bars locked.
I thoroughly recommend it. The building itself is great, the general staff are friendly, and the management are very switched on and helpful.
