If you have problems with your teeth, you could be in far worse places than Hat Yai. In fact, Hat Yai is one of the best possible places you could be anywhere in the world.
There is a big emphasis on all branches of medicine at the Prince of Songkla University, including dentistry. The Faculty of Dentistry at the university is very good and turns out excellent dentists year after year.
There are several treatment clinics within the faculty and this is one option open to you. The choice of dentist is yours; to save money you can let a graduate dentist look at your teeth or you can opt for a fully experienced dentist.
There is a large private dental facility known as Dentalland on Rajyindee Road. It's much larger than a clinic, but not quite in the same league as the Prince of Songkla University.
In addition, there are lots of small clinics around Hat Yai. These places are small but the expertise level of the dentists is the same as at the large places.
For some reason, lots of Hat Yai dentists tend to be women. Maybe this is because girls are generally better students than boys? I don't know. What I do know is that they are excellent.
When I arrived in Hat Yai at the end of 2003 my teeth were in a mess, despite paying out lots of money in the UK to be treated by the main partner at a UK dental practice.
I underwent quite a lot of treatment in Hat Yai (it helped that I worked at the Faculty of Dentistry for several years) and now my teeth have never been better.
It is rare to have to wait very long for an appointment, the work is done to a very high standard, and prices are very cheap. For some fillings I have only had to pay Bt200.
If you are in need of having sufficient dental work carried out, the money you can save by having the work performed in Thailand will pay for a free vacation.
Procedures such as the fitting of titanium implants are very expensive in the West, but only a fraction of the cost in Thailand.
The following listings are a work in progress. I will add more later and if the list grows too large I will provide the information over multiple pages. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me and I will try to help.
Comments: One of the things I hate most in Thailand is the way that Thai names and words are transliterated into English.
This dentist calls himself Banchong on his business cards, but Banjong on the sign outside his clinic. My view is that transliteration is only any use if it is phonetically accurate (which it isn't 99% of the time), and therefore if I were transliterating his name I would write Bunjong.
The clinic is open from 10:00 to 18:00 from Monday to Saturday and closed on Sundays.

Comments: This small dentist clinic is located right in the heart of Hat Yai's famous Gim Yong market, just behind the fruit and food stalls.
The receptionist let out a gasp of astonishment when she saw that a farang had entered the premises. This rather gave me the impression that she wasn't used to dealing with foireigners.
However, I'm sure the dentists (like most Thai doctors and dentists) can be speak English resonably well.
The clinic is open from 10:00 to 19:00 from Thursday to Tuesday and closed on Wednesdays.

Dr Korn (pronounced Gorn) qualified in Edinburgh and on the clinic's business card Edinburgh is described in Thai as being in England. I don't think our Scottish friends would be very pleased about this.
One of the staff I used to work with at the Prince of Songkla dental hospital, who has a full-time job there, works part-time at Dr Korn's clinic. The clinic has a good reputation.
From Monday to Friday the clinic opens from 09:00 to 20:00. On Saturday and Sunday it is open from 09:00 to 16:00.
Patient Comments:
Dr. Korn teaches implant in university. He only comes in after 5.00 pm to attend to patients. His wife, also a dental surgeon, (known as Dr Yue) is the mainstay dentist. She is a very caring and meticulous doctor. She is also utterly gentle too. Charges are most reasonable compared to my country, Singapore. Have recommended many friends and they are very pleased with Dr Yue. I usually include checking and cleaning of my oral in my frequent visits to Hatyai. (More than 6 occasions from 2008 to 2012)

Comments: This is a fairly large hospital; not a small clinic. However, there are several clinics within the hospital that specialise in different types of dentistry, including a children's clinic.
The doctors provide a complete range of treatments from simple fillings to advanced oral and maxillofacial surgery. They also perform cleft palate and cleft lip surgery on newborn infants.
The doctors here can do everything the small clinics do plus a lot more.
Tha facility at Mor Or (as it is known locally) is a combined university and hospital. The university has a stromh emphasis on all areas of medicine. For this reason the dental hospital building is also the university dental faculty.
If you want to save some money you can let a dentist student look at your teeth. They don't have as much experience as qualified dentists but they are careful and well supervised.
